BIOGRAPHY SANDRA BULLOCK

1970 Imported from Germany
John (a government administrator and voice coach) and Helga (a German opera singer) shuttle their teenage daughters, Sandra and Gesine, between Europe and the Washington, D.C. area. "I landed back in the United States hitting puberty, not looking like an American kid," she tells PEOPLE in 2007 of her time in Arlington, Va. "And everything in junior high's about how you look. It was hell."

1988 Bionic Debut
New York Magazine theatre critic John Simon singles out Bullock for her Off-Broadway performance as a Southern belle in No Time Flat. The review helps her land an agent, and soon after she makes her TV acting debut as a crippled girl-turned-bionic woman in NBC's Bionic Showdown: The Six Million Dollar Man and the Bionic Woman with Lee Majors and Lindsay Wagner (left).


1992 November 13
Finding Love At Work
After starring in the short-lived NBC sitcom version of Working Girl, Bullock stars as a nerdy psychobiologist in Love Potion No. 9. While filming, she falls for costar Tate Donovan (right), who she dates for more than three years. "The person who needed me most was always the person I was attracted to," Bullock tells PEOPLE of the split. "My priorities were him first, me second."


1993October 08
Sly's Partner

Bullock squeezes into a skin-tight body suit opposite Sylvester Stallone's in the sci-fi action flick Demolition Man (left), which opens at No. 1 at the box office. Entertainment Weekly says Bullock makes "something out of a nothing role" and "even makes stilted lines like 'I find this lack of stimulus to be truly disappointing' sound natural."


1994 June 10
Speeding Bus Driver

In the action movie Speed, Keanu Reeves (right) recruits Bullock to drive a bomb-rigged bus, and in the chaos, they fall in love. "Everyone told me not to do Speed," she tells The Virginian-Pilot. "I mean, it looked like I'd be just 'the girl,' [but] I've learned to do things by instinct." The film grosses more than $121 million at the box office, and while Reeves doesn't return for the disappointing sequel, the two stars reunite for the romantic drama The Lake House in 2006.

1995 April 21
Switching Gears

Bullock plays a hopeless romantic who pretends to be the fiancée of a coma patient in the romantic comedy While You Were Sleeping (left), which opens at No. 1 in the box office. "I think people are under some misapprehension that what she's doing on-screen is just being herself," writer-director Marc Lawrence later tells Vogue. "I've always felt, because of her ability to do physical comedy, that she is the reincarnation of Lucille Ball."


1996 July 24
In Love...with Austin

Bullock stars with Matthew McConaughey (left) in A Time to Kill, and they are linked romantically for the remainder of the 90s. "I just look at her and I think, Wow!" McConaughey tells In Style. "But she doesn't know how beautiful she is or how much people like her. She's just so regular about everything." In 1998, Bullock moves near McConaughey in Austin, Texas, where she builds a home and eventually opens a Cajun-inspired restaurant. "You never know when you'll fall in love; you don't expect it. And I fell in love with Austin," Bullock tells In Style. "I've gone there to build my home. My roots. I'm building a home there with family in mind, children and grandchildren.
1998 Taking Charge
Bullock forms her own production company Fortis Films, which her younger sister Gisene (right) helps run. She writes, produces, directs and stars in the 30-minute short Making Sandwiches with McConaughey. After it screens at Sundance, Bullock signs a three-year production deal at Warner Bros, which proves fruitful with seven movies, all starring Bullock, including Hope Floats and Two Weeks Notice, that rake in a total of $700 million at the box office, plus $255 million in DVDs by 2007, according to Forbes.
2000 December 22
Miss Congeniality

Bullock plays a frumpy FBI agent who goes undercover at a beauty pageant in Miss Congeniality, also starring Benjamin Bratt and Michael Caine. The film, coproduced by Bullock's production company Fortis Films, earns more than $106 million at the box office and she reprises her role for 2005's Miss Congeniality: Armed and Fabulous.


2002 March
Sandy the TV Producer
After meeting stand-up comedian George Lopez at one of his gigs, Bullock develops a sitcom for him. "Who would have thought that my life would go from 'me, me, me' to 'George, George, George,'" Bullock jokes to Variety in 2001. She executive produces the Latino sitcom, George Lopez (left), which runs for six successful seasons on ABC.


2002 April 19
Younger Love At Work
Bullock produces and stars as an FBI profiler in the psychological thriller Murder by Numbers, She quietly begins dating costar Ryan Gosling (right), who is 16 years younger than Bullock. The two date for more than a year, but keep their relationship very private.


2002 December 20
Last Romantic Comedy

Bullock plays Ellen Burstyn's daughter in the chick-flick Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, and stars in what she calls her last romantic comedy: Two Weeks Notice with Hugh Grant (left). "I had the ultimate romantic partner in Hugh Grant. So I've done that nice chapter in my life, and that chapter is closed...I'd rather go watch one than be in one because I wouldn't buy it if I was doing it now," she tells Vogue.

Smitten With Motorcycle Man

While touring the set of vehicle-makeover show Monster Garage with her godson, Bullock meets tattooed motorcycle tycoon Jesse James. They soon begin dating and become secretly engaged the following year. Bullock wears a 1910 Tiffany & Co. vintage engagement ring from jeweler Neil Lane's private collection on her left index finger.

2005 May 06
An Oscar-Winning Crash
Bullock plays a prejudice, spoiled politician's wife in the Oscar-winning film Crash, a multicharacter study of L.A. race relations also starring Don Cheadle, Thandie Newton and Ryan Phillippe. Bullock's small role in the drama ensemble, which earns her and her costars a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Cast, "gave me so much pride," she tells PEOPLE. "It was re-inspiring."

2005 July 16
Bullock Weds At 40

"I always thought of marriage as a death sentence," Bullock tells Vanity Fair, "that there'd be a ball and chain, and you'd be told, 'You need to stop doing these things and become a good little wife'." In spite of her negative outlook, she marries James and becomes stepmother to his three children. "My love and my want for their future and their happiness, for their homework to be done and for them to know how smart and beautiful they are is no less than if I'd had a child on my own," she tells PEOPLE.

'Scary Stuff'
Bullock is applauded for her portrayal of author Harper Lee in the Truman Capote biopic Infamous. "It's a very scary undertaking," Bullock tells Vogue, of playing Lee. "I'm sort of in a new phase in life where I don't want to do anything that doesn't petrify me, even if it's not well received. It's good to do things that scare the shit out of you...It's not the lead, but it helps tell Truman's story and it's scary. But this chapter's all about scary stuff."

Stalker Tries to Kill James

A woman tries to run over Bullock's husband James, 38, with her Mercedes. Bullock, 42, as well as James' 10-year-old son, Jesse Jr., witness the attack outside their Sunset Beach home. Although James is unharmed, the woman, identified as Marcia Valentine, 46, is charged with two felonies for assault and stalking.


2009 March
Bullock's Back!
With two new films out in the spring (All About Steve and The Proposal with Ryan Reynolds), romantic comedy queen Bullock is slated to take over the box office, but it's her personal life that truly brings her joy. "My greatest joy is making our home what it's supposed to be," Bullock tells In Style. "Being a good wife, a good stepmom, a good current wife to the ex-wife. We're a family."

Return to Rom-Com

Bullock stars as Ryan Reynolds' overbearing boss and faux fiancée in The Proposal. With both celebs stripping down for a nude scene in the film, Bullock shares her secret to looking sexy onscreen. "You know why I looked hot? Because everyone was looking at Ryan," she tells Glamour. The film rakes in more than $314 million worldwide.


2009 December
Better Than Ever

As her heartfelt football drama The Blind Side breaks box office records, Bullock, 45, becomes the first female star to lead a film into the $200 million mark. "I've never had this many opportunities in my lifetime," she tells EW. In 2010, her performance earns Bullock – who wins a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild award – her first Oscar.

Days after her Oscar victory, Bullock's personal life takes center stage as reports surface that her husband of five years, Jesse James, had an affair.
